Reasons for Conscription in WWI
There were many reasons why the government, and Prime Minister Robert Bordon got conscription passed as a law in Canada. The biggest reason why conscription was "needed" was because of the huge drop in soldier enrollment after 1914. The army constantly needed more and more men but very little men decided to enroll for the army.
Reasons Why Enrollment Decreased?
The main reason why there were so many volonteers for WWI during 1914 was because everyone had saw it as a glorious adventure and they would go see sites such as Berlin or Paris. This image was long gone during 1915. The men realized the slim chance they had to stay alive or free from injury if they were on the front lines. They would also be turned away from increagly high casualty rate.
Many also didn't want to leave Canada at the time because employment and wages were over the roof! It was an easy life at Canada and many men did w=not want to give it up or simply didn't care to go.
Farmers, were not only supplying food for the army, but for the rest of the countrey as well. They claimed how much they were against coscription and said that they needed as much help as they could get with the farms.
